Signs Your Heating System Needs Replacement

November 4, 2025

A working heater is required for comfortable living here in Massachusetts, but how do you know when your heating system needs maintenance or replacement? Let us at Modern Energy share the answer to some common questions.

How Old is Too Old for a Heater?

Time is, of course, one of the main signs that you may need a new heating system. 15 years is the standard lifespan if it is well maintained. Some may need a new system as early as 10 years or as late as 25 years. Having an older system isn't necessarily a problem, but keep a close eye out for any problems with the unit if it's past 15 years. This is also the standard regardless of the type of heating system. Whether it is a classic oil furnace, a heat pump, or something else, 15 years is about how long it will last.

Why Does My Furnace Keep Breaking?

If you are constantly having repairmen come and take a look at your heating system, that's a pretty obvious sign, but how often is too often? A once-a-year checkup is standard, so if you are having people repair your furnace two, three, or four times a year, strongly consider an upgrade.

Why Are My Heating Bills Higher Than Normal?

When heating systems begin to break, they have to use more fuel to keep the temperature stable in your home. This will often take the form of your heating bill slowly rising from year to year, even if the weather isn't getting colder year to year.

Why is My House Colder than I Set it to?

As heating systems get older, they can start to struggle to circulate air properly throughout the home. This creates hot and cold spots throughout the house. Another possible cause for this issue is that the system just cannot get hot enough to effectively heat a home. Both of these are signs that you should look into getting a replacement or repair.

Why Is My Furnace Making Noise?

What sounds are normal for a furnace? Furnaces normally make a gentle hum or a low rumble, but when they are starting to break, they often get louder and develop a buzzing or clanking sound. This is true for all heating systems, but it does seem more common with a furnace.

Why Does My Heater Smell Weird?

As heating systems start to break down, this can lead to inconsistent temperatures and operation. This can cause the internal components to overheat and they can give off a bad smell. If your heater smells bad, without any other explanation, you should look into getting it replaced or repaired.

Why Is My Furnace Leaking Water?

There are many reasons, but the common ones are: a broken pressure valve, a corroded tank, and sediment buildup. Some of these can be easily fixed. While leaking water is never good, if you have none of the other factors on this list, you may be fine. Regardless, if your heating system is leaking water, you should call an HVAC professional.

Can I Wait to Replace My Heater?

While you may be able to get a few more years out of a dying heating system, it leads to risks. In addition to high costs and a less comfortable home, it also increases the chances of a fire starting or you or a loved one contracting carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have doubt in your heater, you should get it replaced.
